After some weeks where I guess SharePoint team has been very busy, we can finally say that the “real and definitive” service pack (SP) 1 for SharePoint 2013 has just arrived and it’s ready to download and install on your SharePoint deployments (Note: For your reference, I recommend you to read Stefan Goßner ’s blog post about the re-release of SharePoint 2013 SP 1. In this article I will show you one of the enhancements included as part of the SharePoint 2013 SP 1: a first integration approach between SharePoint 2013 and Yammer. Indeed, SharePoint 2013 included a first approach to real hybrid solutions where we will have out of the box the possibility of using on-premises and Office 365 features.
Configuring SharePoint 2013 and Yammer integration
Supposing you have already installed SharePoint 2013 SP 1 in your CloudShare environment, the process of configuring and enabling Yammer integration features is quite straightforward:
- Open the SharePoint 2013 Central Administration. There you will have a new section called Office 365 that allows you not only to configure the integration with Yammer, but also the integration with OneDrive for Business. Click the “Configure Yammer” link in that section.
- In the “Yammer Configuration” page, simply click the “Configure” button.
- Once the configuration process finishes, the first change you will see in the SharePoint 2013 user interface is the “Newsfeed” link is not anymore in the top navigation bar. This link has been replaced by the “Yammer” link.
- If you click the “Yammer” link, you will redirected to a SharePoint 2013 application page called “Yammer.aspx”. This page only displays a welcome message to the Yammer social network.
- Once you press the “Take me to Yammer” button, you’ll be redirected to the Yammer login page where you have to type your Yammer credentials.
Therefore, even this is a first approach towards an integration between Yammer and SharePoint 2013, at the end it is not a real integration due to the following facts:
- The SharePoint 2013 Newsfeed is still there and every SharePoint user in your deployment can still access to it and see previous conversations hold there, i.e, the native SharePoint newsfeed has not been replaced by the Yammer wall of your social network as you could expect.
- Every document, site, person or tag followed by a SharePoint user is registered in the SharePoint social infrastructure and not in Yammer. This means that for the moment you will have to use some SharePoint social features like the “follow” one or the recommendations provided by the search engine.
- There is no single sign on between Yammer and SharePoint, so when you access to Yammer from SharePoint you’ll have to type your Yammer credentials.
And that’s all about integration features between SharePoint 2013 and Yammer available one you have installed SP1 for SharePoint 2013. Happy CloudSharing!
